Mat Pilates vs. Equipment Pilates: Which method is best for you?

What is the difference between mat Pilates and Pilates using equipment?

Both mat Pilates and equipment-based Pilates share the core principles and philosophy of the practice: alignment, breath, control, concentration, precision, and flowing movements. They aim to improve core strength, flexibility, posture, and overall body awareness. However, there are significant differences between the two that might make you drawn more to one than the other.

The main differences between mat Pilates and apparatus Pilates lie in the exercises performed and, of course, the equipment used during the practice.

Let’s break it down.

What is mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates focuses on core strength, flexibility, balance, and body awareness with exercises primarily utilizing body weight and gravity as resistance. These exercises can include a variety of movement series involving flexion, rotation, extension, side bending and planks that work the body as a whole. As you probably guessed from the name, mat Pilates is performed using a yoga or Pilates mat on the floor (a carpeted area will also work just fine). Mat Pilates classes are typically accessible and widely available—especially from the comfort of your own home—as they only require a mat and minimal equipment.

What is apparatus Pilates?

Apparatus Pilates can be more dynamic and multidimensional than mat Pilates as it targets specific muscles and movement patterns using various types of equipment. This style of Pilates allows for a greater range of exercises and variations, offering a wider scope for not only challenging and progressive workouts but also rehabilitative ones. The specialized equipment used includes the Reformer, chair, spine corrector, Cadillac, and a few other pieces. The springs, straps, pulleys, and adjustable parts of these pieces provide varying levels of resistance, help with proper alignment, and offer assistance during movement.

Which is best for me?

The choice between mat Pilates and equipment-based Pilates often depends on personal preference and individual goals as well as access to equipment and studio facilities. Many people incorporate both forms into their Pilates practice to enjoy a diverse range of exercises and training methods.

With its adjustable resistance and machine support, Pilates using the equipment is a great option for those seeking a bit of guidance during their workouts. In fact, I often have my students start with apparatus Pilates to help them learn the positions before moving onto the mat where certain shapes can take more effort (especially if there’s no props).

If you're recovering from an injury or find it challenging to get up and down from the floor, the elevated design of the Reformer, chair, and Cadillac are extremely beneficial! The springs and exercises can be easily modified on each apparatus, making it accessible for nearly everyone. Plus, it's the perfect option for individuals who might have difficulty with certain movements (such as the teaser or some prone variations) or are looking to work on maintaining proper form.

On the other hand, mat Pilates focuses mainly on stability and body control as you rely solely on your body weight (and gravity, of course). This form of Pilates is very core-empowering, encouraging greater body awareness as you stabilize yourself without the help of a machine. Using props like the Pilates ring and stability ball during matwork supports the body, provides added stability and resistance as well as helping you engage specific muscle groups, allowing for an effective and targeted practice.

Ultimately, the choice between apparatus and mat Pilates boils down to what best aligns with your specific needs and aspirations. Trying both options is an excellent way to determine which one you enjoy most and which is most effective for your wellness journey!
