Pilates for beginners: The wel•lam approach
So you’ve been thinking about giving Pilates a try but are unsure where and how to begin. Let me guide you on wel•lam’s approach to Pilates…
Pilates is an amazing low impact exercise that you can do from the comfort of your own home or at a studio using various equipment. It’s designed to strengthen the postural muscles around the spine, improve flexibility and balance, and build body awareness (so you could say it’s a pretty great workout!).
Whether you’ve done Pilates just once or twice or are a complete newbie, I’m here to help you get started and be your official Pilates guru.
At wel•lam, I offer sessions that will help you develop practices to restore and maintain your mind-body connection and your overall well-being. Using Pilates equipment and yoga props, tools, and techniques, I support all kinds of clients, from those recovering from injuries to new moms returning to their Pilates practice and people simply looking to fit a daily workout into their busy schedule.
With my unique wellness program tailored to the goals and needs of individual clients and my abundant skill set, no two sessions are ever alike!
Everything I just said may sound picture perfect, but what’s really involved in practicing Pilates?
Here’s my approach…
If I had to label my style of teaching, I’d say it’s contemporary and modernized, functional, and therapeutic. It has been influenced by many years of education, including earning my MBA and most recently becoming a Yoga Therapist. I’m forever expanding and deepening my knowledge and understanding of Pilates to holistically and empathetically serve each and every one of my clients.
I integrate all of my schooling—a synthesis of all the trainings I’ve taken and the personal experiences I’ve had—into each session I teach. My curiosity and love for my work motivates me to earn certifications through all sorts of Pilates schools, allowing me to uniquely approach each student and identify any source of weakness or injury just by watching them move. I genuinely pride myself in meeting everyone where they are, carefully crafting a program that works for each person’s body, mind, and soul at that place and time.
My approach goes beyond traditional Pilates education and training. I am also trauma informed and have certifications in CPR, Restorative Yoga, Yin Yoga, and assistance in rehabilitation of injuries. I specialize in Prenatal & Post Pregnancy Pilates & Yoga, Musculoskeletal Pathologies such as osteoporosis, and back care. Lastly, I pioneered a Pilates series supporting both the physical and emotional well-being of teens.
How are wel•lam sessions unique?
At wel•lam, I offer quality movement and a unique wellness program tailored to the goals and needs of each individual. With a variety of Pilates equipment and yoga props, tools and techniques, I’m able to support anyone who walks into my studio. My clients are exposed to so much more than just Pilates; each session is an integrative experience where they embrace breathwork, meditation, and all types of yoga. Each one of my clients is on their own path of healing and self-care—and I’m here to help them on their journey one step at a time.
Who can benefit?
The simple answer is: everyone! Everyone moves, and therefore, everyone can learn to move in ways that best suits their unique form. The wel•lam approach is holistic and integrative; it requires you to engage your mind, body, and soul in order to have a functional, therapeutic, and transformative experience.
What do I need for a wel•lam session?
I always recommend wearing clothing you feel comfortable moving in (avoid loose or baggy clothing). For in-studio sessions, wear grip socks and bring a towel and plenty of water. For virtual sessions, have water nearby to stay hydrated and be sure to set yourself up on a mat, carpeted area or home equipment.
What can I expect during a wel•lam session?
Sessions can include breathwork, Pilates, yoga poses, meditation, and great music (based on your requests!). Each session is prepared as a distinct experience based on your needs that particular day and your overall wellness journey—so no two sessions are the same!
