The 5 Benefits of Pilates for Breast Cancer Recovery
Early in my teaching career, I worked closely with clients recovering from surgery and chronic conditions. One client had recently completed breast cancer treatment and told me that she just wanted to feel like herself again—so that became my mission.
We began with breathing, seated stretches, and gentle arm movements. Week by week, she moved with more freedom and confidence as she rediscovered her mind-body connection. Watching her feel more like herself with every session was one of the most meaningful parts of our work together—and it’s why I believe in this practice so deeply.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it feels right to share how Pilates can support recovery by helping people rebuild strength, mobility, and confidence in their bodies.
Breast cancer treatment—whether it’s surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation—can leave the body feeling different than it felt before treatment. Movement may be limited, posture can change, and fatigue is common. Finding gentle ways to move again is an important part of the healing process!
One of the best ways to support your body after breast cancer treatment is through Pilates. Keep reading for the 5 amazing benefits that Pilates offers those going through breast cancer recovery.
1. Improves Posture and Shoulder Mobility
After surgery or radiation, it’s common for the chest and shoulder muscles to feel tight or restricted. Pilates movements help open the chest up, stretch the front of the body, and strengthen both the back and shoulder stabilizers. This not only improves posture but also makes daily tasks, like reaching overhead or getting dressed, feel easy again.
2. Rebuilds Strength and Stability
Loss of muscle tone and changes in balance are often side effects of cancer treatment. Pilates focuses on controlled, full-body movements that strengthen the core, hips, and spine while protecting any vulnerable areas. Even small, slow exercises can help restore strength and stability over time.
3. Supports Lymphatic Flow
For those who’ve had lymph nodes removed or experienced swelling (lymphedema), gentle movement is key. The mindful breathing and controlled motions in Pilates can encourage healthy circulation and lymphatic drainage, reducing stiffness and supporting overall recovery.
4. Reduces Stress and Promotes Relaxation
Healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional too. My integrative approach combines the movement of Pilates with yoga therapy practices such as breathwork and meditation. This combination can help lower stress levels and support nervous system regulation. Many clients find that this blended approach becomes a calming routine, helping them reconnect with their body in a positive and grounded way.
5. Encourages Body Awareness and Confidence
After treatment, it can take time to feel at home in your body again. Pilates offers a safe space to move, notice new or different physical sensations, and rebuild trust in your body’s strength and resilience. Over time, this awareness translates to increased confidence and greater ease in daily life.
The Bottom Line
Pilates can be a powerful part of recovery after breast cancer. It’s gentle, mindful, and can be adapted to meet you exactly where you are.
