Group Pilates Classes vs. Private Pilates Sessions: Which is for You?

Before we jump into whether group classes or private sessions are best for you, let’s review the basics—a little Pilates 101.

Pilates is the perfect practice for reaching the deep muscles in your body, particularly around the base of the spine and the abdominals. It improves your posture and balance, builds strength and flexibility, and increases your breath capacity. It is also very rehabilitative for the body (this is an amazing Pilates perk that just about everyone can benefit from!).

Choosing how to go about your Pilates practice really depends on your goals. You can take group classes or sign up for private sessions—but how do you choose?

Group classes and private sessions: What's the difference?

Both private and group classes are beneficial in their own ways! 

There are many reasons why people take group Pilates classes. One of the main reasons being the community! It’s a great way to meet new people, make friends who you automatically have a bond with, and feel a sense of togetherness and belonging. Additionally, group classes are traditionally more budget-friendly than private sessions. 

So, what makes private sessions unique and different from group classes? 

Private sessions (also called privates for short) are targeted to your individual needs, while in a group atmosphere, there’s one class flow taught to everyone (with necessary progressions and modifications if needed). I've been teaching privates for as long as I've been a teacher, and I can say with confidence that every single one of my private sessions is unique because every human is unique. Privates allow for individualized attention—100% of the focus is on you, while in a group class, the teacher has to focus on multiple students. 

Privates are great for anyone who is new to Pilates. One-on-one sessions will help you get familiarized with the equipment and learn the repertoire before venturing to a group class. 

Private sessions are also perfect (and highly recommended) for those who have injuries or certain health conditions. Privates allow you to really take your time and give the teacher the opportunity to cater the practice to your condition or injury. 

What can I expect during my first private session?

First, I need to get to know you! We’ll delve into an intake, go over any questions you have, and discuss your personal goals. Understanding your aspirations will help me tailor the sessions to align with your desired outcomes.

I’ll then introduce you to the Pilates equipment and props so you can get familiarized with their purpose and functionality.

Since everyone’s body is different, I’ll conduct a postural assessment to analyze your unique posture and movement patterns. By identifying any imbalances, we can create a more tailored approach to your sessions, targeting specific areas that require attention.

Finally, we’ll dive into foundational movements, core principles, and techniques that form the basis of Pilates. Throughout this process, I encourage you to ask any and all questions that come to mind and let me know how your body feels through these movements! 

At the end of your first session, we’ll come up with a future plan of programming and session scheduling.

How often should I practice Pilates?

There is no one size fits all answer to this question! It depends on many things, including your availability, lifestyle, budget, and goals. 

Some of my private clients practice with me every day or three times a week or even just once a week. For clients who practice with me less than three times per week, I suggest another modality of movement (or I give them movement homework to complete) on their off days. 

Consistency is key, and in Pilates, regular practice allows your body to adapt and improve its strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. 

If you are new to Pilates or have limited time, I suggest starting with two sessions per week. As you become more comfortable and experienced, you can gradually increase to three or more weekly sessions!
