6 Reasons to Become a Pilates Teacher

If you asked me 15 years ago if I thought my career would be in the wellness industry, my answer would have been no. I would have bet I’d be working a 9-5 for corporate America with great benefits and perks galore while wearing blazers and heels with my go-to handbag. Instead, I traded that for a life I love with a schedule that I get to create with a uniform of soft leggings and my go-to vest—my students know it’s one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe!

So, why become a Pilates teacher? To start, Pilates teacher training programs provide a unique opportunity for individuals to deepen their own Pilates practice, become qualified instructors, and share their passion with others.

Let’s dive into six specific reasons to become a Pilates teacher (all of which I can tell you are 100% true)!

1. It will deepen your knowledge and understanding of Pilates.

Pilates teacher training programs provide a very comprehensive look into the Pilates method, including its history, principles, and techniques. Throughout your journey, you’ll learn the proper execution of exercises, alignment, modifications, and progressions to safely and effectively teach your clients, plus so much more!

"I had the pleasure of working with Master Trainer Lia for just a few months to reach the finish line of my Club Pilates final test-out. Honestly, it was 90% Lia and 10% me that made it happen. Lia is incredibly organized, and even though she works with many individuals simultaneously, she somehow gives you her undivided attention and time. I still don't know the secret behind this talent. Before I met Lia, I was at a stalemate, dragging my feet, but she managed to turn it all around with her belief in me and a clear, achievable end goal. Her method of guidance is highly adaptive, tailored to my specific needs. In hindsight, setting the date for my final test-out was the key to breaking through. In just a few months, I not only regained my motivation but also deepened my understanding of Pilates. Lia's encouragement inspired me to watch more Pilates content in my free time, boosting my overall confidence. I can't emphasize enough how Lia makes the impossible seem possible. If I had to describe Lia in one sentence, it would be: She makes 'impossible' spell 'I'm possible.' Thank you so very much, Lia."

2. You crave more time and freedom in your schedule.

Becoming a Pilates teacher lets you create your own schedule and work from anywhere—virtually or in person (who doesn’t love that flexibility?!). You can work part-time or full-time or teach a few classes or private sessions a week. It’s your schedule. This flexibility is particularly appealing to those who want a work-life balance that gives them time for family, travel, and other hobbies.

3. You’ll expand your career opportunities.

Becoming a certified Pilates instructor opens up doors to many other career opportunities. Not only can you work in boutique Pilates studios, but you can also work inside a gym, rehabilitation center, corporate setting, and even your own private studio! These teacher training programs offer continuing education courses where you can expand your knowledge and skills, making you a more valuable asset to potential employers.

For example, throughout my 15-year career, I have earned certifications in CPR, Biomechanics, Functional Anatomy for Movement & Injuries, Neurological Conditions, and Hypermobility (just to name a few). If you’re a newbie instructor, I always recommend beginning with additional education around pre and postnatal Pilates or osteoporosis—these are two of my favorite topics!

“Lia was my Master Trainer for the 500-hour Pilates Teacher Training, and taking the program with her truly changed my life. Her knowledge and experience in teaching are evident, but what I appreciated most was her patience in allowing me to progress through the program at my own pace and in my own way. She provided thorough guidance and mentorship at every step, yet I never felt rushed or pressured to complete a task. Her gentle, consistent encouragement kept me motivated all the way to the test-out. As a result, I left my previous job and am now teaching Pilates full-time. I’m incredibly grateful for the journey I took with Lia and how it has transformed my career and life.”

4. You’ll fulfill your desire to help others.

By teaching Pilates, you can make a difference in the lives of others through helping them improve not only their physical health, but their mental health, self confidence, and overall well-being. Regularly practicing Pilates can even help clients relieve discomfort from past injuries and help them stay injury-free.

5. It’ll improve your own physical and mental well-being.

Pilates is known to have so many physical and mental health benefits! Not only does a Pilates teacher training program deepen your practice, you’ll also get to experience these life-changing benefits firsthand. Pilates helps improve posture, flexibility, strength, and balance while reducing stress and promoting mental clarity—just to name a few perks.

6. You’ll connect with an amazing community.

Pilates teacher training programs give you the opportunity to connect with a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for Pilates. You’ll have the chance to learn from experienced instructors and connect with other students who are on a similar journey! These relationships can grow to be invaluable as you live out your own Pilates practice and career.
